SJU, PCC (Autonomous), PGC celebrate National Science Day 2025

St. Joseph University (SJU), Chümoukedima and Patkai Christian College (PCC) (Autonomous) and Phek Government College observed National Science Day by organising competition and seminar.
At SJU, the programme was organised by Science Club in collaboration with the Institution Innovation Council. A total of 288 students and over 40 faculty members from the six science departments: Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology attended the programme.
The event was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Rev. Sr. Dr. Thianes Mary (Deputy Registrar), Sr. Chinnamal (Finance Controller), Fr. Agustin (Campus Administrator), Dr. S. Thiyagarajan (Controller of Examinations), and the Heads of the six science departments.
The program commenced with an inaugural session moderated by Thüjoveto Swüro (Department of Mathematics) and welcome address by Dr. K. Rajaganesh (Dean of Science and Management Studies), followed by an invocation from Rev. Fr. Dr. L. Anish (Public Relations Officer).
Delivering keynote address on the theme, “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future”, SJU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. D. Gnanadurai, highlighted the significance of National Science Day, tracing its history back to 1986 when the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC) recommended February 28 as National Science Day in India. He also spoke about the 2025 National Science Day theme: “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat.”
He encouraged the Science Departments to align with India’s National Science Day theme every year and conduct competitions two to three days before the event from next year to recognize and motivate students. He also urged the university to celebrate Indian Space Week (August 12-18) with relevant programs.
Following the technical session, students actively participated in competitions aimed at fostering scientific curiosity and creativity. Participants showcased innovative projects and models under the theme “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future.”
The students also engaged in a thought-provoking debate on “Will AI ultimately create more jobs than it eliminates, or will it lead to widespread unemployment?” and Participants creatively dressed up as scientific characters, showcasing their knowledge and enthusiasm for science.
PCC (A): Science community of Patkai Christian College (PCC) (Autonomous) organised a one day seminar on the theme “Empowering Indian Youth for Gobal Leadership in Science and Innovation for VIKSIT BHARAT” on February 28 at Bundrock Auditorium.
Dean, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, Medziphema, Prof. L. Daiho, was the guest of honor and delivered a keynote address highlighting C.V. Raman’s discovery of the Raman effect in 1928, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
He discussed on the growing issue of plastic pollution, stressing the urgent need for awareness and action. He explained that plastic takes years to decompose, causing ongoing damage to ecosystems, noting that by 2050, more plastic than fish is predicted to be in the ocean, with plastic bags killing around 100,000 animals annually.
He suggested solutions such as avoiding single-use plastics, using reusable items like cotton bags and steel utensils, and repurposing plastic in the production of bricks and road asphalt. He concluded by urging everyone to actively contribute to reducing plastic pollution for a healthier environment.
Vice Principal of PCC(A), Dr. R. Peseyie in his welcome address, explained that the objective of National Science Day which was to equip young minds with knowledge and skills.
For National Science Day, several competitions were organized, including Speech, Poster, and Quiz events.
PGC: Science Club of Phek Government College (PGC), Phek on account of National Science Day organised a programme, under the theme “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat” at the college premises.
Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Sabir Chetri elaborated on the theme of the program, highlighting India’s commitment to nurturing youth potential in science and innovation to produce global leaders. He emphasized that no innovation was too big or small and that success comes through consistency, continuous effort, and a curious, problem-solving mindset.
Chetri also discussed how global leadership in science fosters collaborative research to address global challenges like climate change, public health, and energy. He linked India’s vision of becoming a developed nation (Viksit Bharat) to ongoing, sustainable innovation across all sectors, driving economic growth and improving quality of life.
He highlighted the government’s efforts in the education sector through initiatives like the NEP, which promotes interdisciplinary courses and offers students flexibility to explore their interests. Programs like INSPIRE also support young talents in science and research, enabling them to pursue higher education. He encouraged students to seize every opportunity and contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat, a commitment to the betterment of humanity.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Dr. Temjennaro Jamir, welcome address by Assistant Professor, Department of Botany (Convenor of Science Club), Mughato K. Kiba. The programme also featured active student participation in essay and Painting competitions organized by the Science Club, with winners receiving cash prizes and certificates.
