Nagaland University hosts lecture on ‘Climate, Tectonics, and Ichnofossils’

Department of Geology, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, organized a special lecture on “Climate, Tectonics, and Ichnofossils,” on May 2, bringing together faculty, research scholars, and postgraduate students to explore geological insights.

Dr. Jaishri Sanwal Bhatt from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, delivered the first lecture, discussing the interplay between climate and tectonics across the Himalayas and Andaman Islands. She highlighted geo-chronological dating techniques, the role of speleothems in active tectonics, and their potential as earthquake recorders.

The second lecture was presented online by Prof. Bhawani Singh Desai from PDEU Gandhinagar, Gujarat, focusing on ichnology as a tool for investigating palaeoenvironments. He emphasized the application of Seilacher’s Ichnofacies concept and ichnofabric models, illustrating case studies from the Kachchh Basin, the Indian Ocean, and Crimea.

Prof. S. K. Srivastava of Nagaland University delivered the final lecture, exploring Cenozoic sedimentation in Inner Fold Belt, Nagaland. He analysed sedimentary structures, lithofacies, and petrographic compositions, drawing conclusions on depositional environments and sediment provenance from the Palaeogene-Miocene age.

The lecture series, supported by South Eastern Book Agency, Guwahati, was attended by faculty and students from Nagaland University, Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, and Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), with many joining online. The event provided valuable academic insights, fostering discussion on climate, tectonics, and ichnology in geological research.
