Kohima buses under scanner

In order to check road safety in the state capital, Regional Transport Office Kohima (RTO) Saturday commenced a month long initiative on verification of buses plying in and around Kohima town.
Buses in excellent condition with proper documents and toning with chassis number were issued “Tested OK” certification stickers by RTO.
Regional transport officer, Kohima Mezayi Tetseo commented that the initiative was necessitated owing to concern over increasing cases of bus accidents, which had caused death and injury to several people in Kohima town.
It was also enforced to phase out buses, keeping in view the traffic congestion and other road hazards.
Officials from the RTO said that buses running without sticker would be detained, along with driver and conductor, by first week of October.
“They would be phased out straightaway without any warning or imposition of fine”, officials said.
The certification is being issued after verification within the physical parameters of the buses, cross check the chassis numbers, and other relevant documents pertaining to registration, road permit and insurance.
The verification which is being conducted at the old MLA hostel complex daily, except on weekends, will continue for one month.
RTO informed that next phase of verification would focus on local taxis and Manipur oil tankers.
The taxi association has also assured its support to the inspection programme. Secretary of All Nagaland Taxis Association (ANTA), Keneingulie Solo said that proper implementation of programme would benefit both taxi drivers and the public.
Stating that many taxis ply around without repair or maintenance, Solo said government’s initiative to inspect should be rightly implemented.
Meanwhile, officials from “enforcement bureau” in control of the field verification expressed resentment that there was less man power in the field and appealed for government’s initiative to look into the matter.
