‘Tribalism’ destroying Nagas: MC Konyak

Minister for Forest and Excise and senior BJP leader MC Konyak has lamented that “tribalism” and infighting among Nagas was destroying the social fabric of Naga society and giving rise to chronic tribal conflicts and divisions.
The minister who inaugurated the new State BJP office here at Naga Shopping Arcade, Saturday, said it was high time that Nagas do away with “ism” and adopt the right attitude and outlook.
“Our own tribal issues have burnt us (Nagas) for too long. It is time to do away with tribalism and to look ahead,” he said.
Commenting on reported internal dissension within the State BJP, Konyak made it clear that in any political party set-up, no one was above the party and that every party member should uphold and strengthen the party principles.
He said issuing individuals statements and write ups was doing more harm than good to the image of the party.
The State BJP also expressed concern over reports of attacks on churches and atrocities against Christians in Orissa and Karnataka.
BJP Nagaland president Ato Yepthomi informed that during the recent BJP meeting in Bangalore, BJP national president Rajnath Singh had summoned Orissa unit president to clarify to some complaints raised by Nagaland and Meghalaya units of the party.
According to Yepthomi, the Orissa unit president said that the violence in Orissa was not communal but basically a conflict between the STs and SCs, with many from the SC community wanting to convert to Christianity to enjoy some fringe benefits.
The State BJP leaders also clarified that though VHP and Bajrang Dal activists might be involve in the violence, the BJP had no hand whatsoever in such attacks.
A host of State BJP leaders including former ministers Dr. TM Lotha, Imtilemba Sangtam and district office bearers attended the inaugural programme of the new BJP office.
State BJP president chaired the programme while member, BJP national council, Johny Rengma offered vote of thanks.
