Photograph of creature that resembled a human child, caught in an animal trap set up by a villager in Peren district gripped people even at Dimapur as rumour mills worked over time when some began to recall tribal folklore of forest spirit or even wild guesses that it could possibly even be the ‘missing-link’ of human evolution.
The photo circulated was of a creature or primate which died after it was caught in a trap laid by a villager, who then sells such animals to make a living.
After making several inquiries, Nagaland Post team traveled to a place in Peren district, to locate the village where the trapper lives. The journey led to the village deep in Peren district.
On meeting with people in one village, word was sent to the village from where the trapper lived but word came that he was out. The trapper was probably apprehensive that he could be booked under wildlife act.
While probing the origin of the photograph, the GB of the village confirmed that the story of the trapped primate originated from his village but could not provide more details.
He confirmed that the trapper, a middle-aged man lived in his village and made a living by selling animals caught in his trap.
An elderly man told Nagaland Post that the trapper’s children disclosed to villagers that their father had caught “ a baby that looked like a monkey”.
Another one, disclosed that three days prior to discovery of the creature in his trap, the villager had revealed a dream where the creature had asked him to go to the spot and make a wish. However, the trapper went only three days later and found dead in the trap.
Villagers of the area believe in the myth that a person who touched the creature alive could make any wish and have it fulfilled.
It was also revealed that the creature was sold off for Rs.10,000 to a man in Jalukie market. It was also rumoured that the person who bought it in turn, resold it to the third person for a whopping Rs.10 lakh. On being asked who or how the photo was taken, no one could explain it.
