Youth urged to realise importance of voting on ‘National Voters Day’

Dimapur district election machineries along with booth level officers, GB’s from various colonies and the newly enrolled voters who attained 18 years of age to exercise their franchise converged at DC’s Office Complex on January 25 to celebrate ‘National Voter’s Day’.

Former minister, Ihezhe Zhimomi, who was the chief guest on the occasion while welcoming the newly enrolled voters of the district said, “legally, you are now an adults and entitled by right to choose you leader with sound mind and robust health.”

He also urged the young voters not to be waylaid by corruption of politics as it would affect each and every aspect of day-to-day living.

He appealed to the young voters to exercise their franchise with due care and diligence as the decision they took would shape their future.

Deputy commissioner and district election officer Dimapur, N. Hushili Sema delivering the voter’s pledge said the vibrant democratic election process has been widened with the inclusion of so many first time young voters from all the five constituencies of Dimapur district.

ADC & ERO Dimapur K. Tarep Imchen in his introduction speech said January 25 was first observed as ‘National Voters Day’ in 2011.

A per the constitutional amendment (1988), he said the voting age has been lowered from 21 to 18 years as this age group in many countries are most “literate and politically conscious”, and added, lowering age gives chance to youth to express themselves and become part of political process.

Assistant Election officer (ARO) Dimapur, Khekugha Sema delivered the vote of thanks and gave away citation to the best booth level officer’s (BLOs) one each from all the five constituencies in Dimapur district.

MOKOKCHUNG: ‘National Voters Day’ was celebrated in Mokokchung on January 25 at town hall. At the function, Chubawati Chang, ADC & ERO, Mokokchung highlighted on the impact and importance of observance of NVD and SVEEP (Systematic Voters Education & Electoral Participation) Campaign, Dr. Sangyu Yaden, president, Ao Senden gave away the winning prize and certificate of participation to winners and participants of essay and painting competition conducted as part of SVEEP campaign. Murohu Chotso, DC & DEO, Mokokchung felicitated the newly registered voters by giving a badge with the slogan “Proud to be a Voter “and 10 best Booth Level Officers one from each assembly constituency were awarded certificate of Commendation. A total number of 67 citizens took the voters pledge during NVD celebration. The observance of NVD assumed significance as it was celebrated at the time when election to the Nagaland legislative assembly was just around the corner.

WOKHA: The 3rd ‘National Voters Day’ was observed in Wokha on January 25 at DC’s conference Hall. Deputy commissioner, Wokha, Vyasan R speaking during the day said, this day has been observed to create awareness about the democratic and electoral system especially to the new voters who have been enrolled for the first time. Emphasizing on ‘one man one vote’, the DC expressed hope that, there would be free and fair election with the implementation of photo e-roll. Two new voters from Morakjo village were introduced to the gathering. During the function, four best BLOs were awarded – Nchumbemo from 37 AC, R.Libenthung Odyuo from 38 AC, Mhonthung from 39AC and Abeni from 40 A/C. The function concluded with the reading of the voters pledge.

MON: ‘National Voters Day’ was observed in Mon at DC conference hall on January 25. Speaking on the occasion, deputy commissioner, Mon, Angau I. Thou stressed on the theme ‘Your voice, your vote, your future’.
 She appealed to the gathered youth to be ambassadors of clean, free and fair and peaceful election and bring changes in the society, educate the people through their voice, vote and exercise their franchise wisely for the bright future.

Prize distribution to successful participants of half- marathon, SVEEP campaign organized on January 22 by election department in collaboration with the administration, Mon, and taking the pledge were the highlights of the function. Administrative officers, head of departments, various political leaders and youth attended the function.

KIPHIRE: Along with the rest of the country, Kiphire observed ‘National Voters Day’ at DC’s conference hall, participated by civil societies, public leaders, students, ward members and college students
Delivering the key note address, Kesonyu Yhome deputy commissioner, said that National Voters’ Day was celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the election commission of India on January 25, 1950.

After completion of 60 years, the government of India declared January 25 as National Voters’ Day. The first such celebration was held in 2011. Empathizing on the ‘right to vote’, deputy commissioner said, “It is illegal to sell your vote as it is your identity and your right”, adding, one’s right and identity is more than few hundreds and thousands.

DC further expressed it was the duty of the citizens to choose the right representative and urged the gathering not to blame politicians or political parties for not bringing development, if one has sold his voting right and franchise.

Felicitating the newly enrolled voters, DC Kiphire said, the newly enrolled voters should be proud not only because they have grown up but because they are capable of voting for someone who can represent them.

DC later handed over the prizes to winners of essay competition along with cash and citation and also awarded certificate to the best BLO.

Members present in the programme signed and read a pledge together followed by screening of documentary on clean election.

TUENSANG: ‘National Voters Day’ was observed here at DC conference hall Tuensang on Friday. Deputy Commissioner and DEO Tuensang, T. Mhabemo Yanthan while emphasizing on the importance of the day, urged the people to create awareness in enrolling new voters in the electoral roll.
    He also said it was the people’s duty and responsibility to exercise their franchise in order to bring “quality development” in the region. DC congratulated the new voters and urged them to exercise their valuable votes in a proper way. He also felicitated to the newly enrolled voters and best performing BLOs. The pledge was administrated by Sushil Kumar Patel ADC & ERO Tuensang. The programme was followed by demonstration of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).

PHEK: The 3rd anniversary of ‘National Voters Day’ was observed in Phek in DC conference hall.
ADC & ERO, Phek I. Shanen Jamir gave a highlight and significance of ‘National Voters Day’. In his address, he encouraged the young and new enrolled voters to fearlessly participate and exercise their votes in the forth coming state election.

Every vote has its value in order to choose a leader for betterment and development of our society, he stated and appealed to the voters to have a clear conscience without the influence of liquor/ money power etc., so that free and fair election is brought about. He further urged one to exercise their vote in a judicious manner.  To mark the day, deputy commissioner and district election officer, Phek Nikhashe Sema gave badges to the newly enrolled voters. He later led in administering of ‘National voters day’ pledge.
