Nagaland governor Nikhil Kumar made a fervent appeal to all the political parties, state election machinery, government servants engaged in election duty and the people at large to maintain “dignity and decorum” during the election campaign so as to ensure smooth and peaceful conduct of elections.
Addressing the 64th Republic Day, the governor reminded that assembly elections would be held within a month and therefore urged upon government servants engaged in election works to discharge their duties with diligence and dedication so that eligible voters exercised their franchise.
He also acknowledged the NBCC for its ‘Clean Election’ campaign and urged people to abjure “corruption and electoral malpractices” so that the forthcoming elections would be the cleanest in the state’s history.
Nikhil also regretted that despite the best efforts, final solution to the Naga political problem could not materialize before announcement of the polls.
He however appealed to all political parties, Naga Hoho, civil societies, NGOs and the churches, as well as the “Naga underground groups” to continue working for a peaceful settlement of the Naga political issue.
The Governor stressed on privileged status Nagaland enjoys under Article 371 (A) of the constitution which granted safeguard to Naga traditions and customary practices as well as ownership minerals besides granting greater say in managing “one’s own affairs and resources.”
He also acknowledged that the peaceful conditions in Nagaland were due to contributions of the security forces and the state police in maintaining peace and tranquility.
The governor also lauded the government, all the tribal Hohos, the churches, civil societies and NGOs for their constant effort to facilitate the peace process and to bring about peace and understanding among the various political factions.
He also disclosed that the government was planning to open a vocational training centre including computer laboratory for training of ex-servicemen and their children besides the construction of a State Sainik rest house with multifaceted facilities.
Nikhil also said the state government was in the process of implementing ‘Aadhar’ scheme of the Unique Identity Authority of India and the capture of biometrics of the National Population Register was also simultaneously underway in the state. He said the first phase was nearing completion while the second phase would be completed by 2013.
The governor further appealed the people to rise above “parochialism and tribalism” and to rededicate themselves in achieving a common destiny, steadfastly upholding the common thread of unity and oneness.

Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar Saturday presented the Governor’s awards to five persons for distinction in the field of art, music and literature at a function held at Raj Bhavan Durbar Hall, Kohima.
Addressing the function, the Governor congratulated the awardees for their excellence in different fields and also complimented the chief minister Neiphiu Rio for the initiatives taken for the awards.
The Governor encouraged the youth to prove their mettle through their talents and also asked government departments to nurture the youth with the right guidance and approach.
In his address, chief minister Neiphiu Rio called on the Nagas to be united and work for permanent peace.
Describing the occasion as a proud moment, Rio said though the Nagas were affected by insurgency, yet they continued to perform well in various national and international events.
Rio also appreciated NBCC for the initiatives taken for a clean election and said elections should be conducted in free and fair way.
Commissioner & secretary of art & culture, Himato Zhimomi in his address said the award should be a message to march forward with their talents wherever they may be.
The awards were given away by the governor and chief minister to Vilalhou Noudi (54) for Art (painting), Seyie Putsure (35) for Art (interior), Atsu Sekhose (37) for Art (fashion), Ngapjao Konyak (55) for Music (folk) and Renthungo Merry for music.
Besides certificates, each awarded received a memento, shawl and cash prize of Rs. 25,000. The programme was conducted by Gugu Iralu and vote of thanks delivered by chief secretary Alemtemshi Jamir.
President’s medal for 4 policemen
DIMAPUR, JAN 26 (NPN): Four police personnel from Nagaland have been awarded with President’s Medal Award for meritorious service. This was announced on the occasion of Republic Day celebration at Kohima Saturday.
The awardees of the Medal include SP Phek, Etssimongo Ngullie; DEF Kohima inspector/AB, Viniho Sumi and DEF Kohima havildar, Bulie Angami for President’s Police Medal for meritorious service 2013. Deputy SP fire & emergency services, Vizakie Letro for President’s Fire Service Medal for meritorious service 2013.
