Pre-poll crackdown on liquor dens; 13 held

At least 13 persons were apprehended and over 10000 cases of assorted Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) were recovered from 30 locations spread over six different areas in Dimapur.

The raids were jointly conducted the District administration along with Dimapur police as an exercise to curb illegal sale of liquor before the election.

During one of the raids, an assistant sub inspector was injured when miscreants threw stones at the raiding party.

According to district administration, the raids were conducted as part of a pre-election campaign against rampant smuggling and sale of liquor.

Deputy commissioner Dimapur and district election  officer (DEO) N. Hushili Sema said “Some good sense should prevail among the people, particularly, amongst the youth, as liquor was the root cause of all the problems”.

The raid teams were divided into six teams each one led by one police officer and magistrate.
Hushili said that the raid was not aimed at any particular individuals or party.

“Our intention is to at least curb and control smuggling and sale of liquor during the election season,” said Hushili.

The places covered by the joint teams of district administration and the police numbered six areas and over 30 locations including DC court junction, Burma Camp, the National Highway areas etc.

“This is just a starter, any time we will be conducting surprise raids,” said Hushili and urged the residents of colonies and Dimapur citizens to cooperate.

With the district administration seriously considering taking more actions, more raids were likely to follow in the coming days.
