As per The Representation of the Peoples’ Act where it grants right to every eligible voter to exercise his franchise based on the principle of one ‘Man One Vote’, deputy commissioner and DEO Kiphire, Kesonyu Yhome IAS has informed the voters under Kiphire that on the day of poll, no one can vote in the name of another even with his consent.
If he does so it would amount to impersonation which is an offence under Section 171 D of Indian Penal Code, DC stated.
The offence is punishable with imprisonment of either description which may extend to one year or with fine or both.
No one can vote more than once even if his name is included at more than one place by oversight. If one does so, he/she will be guilty of impersonation which will be punishable as above, DC stated.
Impersonation is an offence under Section 171-D of the IPC. Under this section a person who applies for a voting paper of votes in the name of another person, whether living or dead or in a fictitious name or who having voted once at an election applies for voting paper again or whoever abates etc., commits the offence of impersonation (i.e. bogus voting) and any such offence is punishable with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year or with fine or with both.
