BJP won’t dump Modi, NDA headed for split

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP looked set to split in a few months after the BJP virtually rejected Nitish Kumar’s demand to rule out by the year-end Narendra Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate and ignored the Bihar CM’s warning that he would walk out of the opposition grouping if his wishes were not complied with. A day after JD (U) leader and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar virtually vetoed Modi, a section of the Bihar BJP is now pushing for a break with the JD(U)- but in a bid to buy some time, BJP president Rajnath Singh has asked partymen to wait till December.

Meanwhile, there is now a growing chorus within the BJP for LK Advani as the PM candidate, with Yashwant Sinha and MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan batting for the ‘Lauha Purush’.

Kumar’s warning came in a hard-hitting speech aimed at Modi in which he — without taking names — rejected the BJP leader’s candidature for the powerful political office on grounds of lack of “secular” credentials and pursuing a growth model which was exclusive and not humane.
