Parliamentary secretary, information technology & communication, technical education, science & technology and taxes, Tovihoto Ayemi attended the 72nd birth anniversary celebration of Jnanpith Awardee litterateur, late Dr. Mamoni Raisom Goswami (Indira Goswami) at ITA Centre, Machkhowa, Guwahati on November 14.
Speaking as the guest of honour, Tovihoto extended greetings on behalf of the people of Nagaland, and said he was delighted to learn that the South East Asia Ramayana Research Centre has been established fulfilling the wish and dream of late Dr. Goswami.
He said it was even more overwhelming to know that the organizers of the programme, South East Asia Ramayana Research Centre and Byatikram Mass Awareness and Social Development Organization has been involved in organizing activities including cultural programmes, symposiums, seminars etc., in collaboration with Assam government and Government of India.
Stating it was rare for the people of our north east region to produce the likes of late Dr. Indira Goswami, he said her immense contribution in the field of Assamese literature and her role as the mediator between ULFA and government of India was outstanding although she considered herself an “observer.”
He then urged everyone present to learn and take along with them the good works of late writer.
Meanwhile, prior to the start of the formal programme, Tovihoto Ayemi and other dignitaries released pigeons in the air commemorating the 72nd birth anniversary of Indira Goswami.
Governor of Assam, J.B. Patnaik who was the chief guest described late Dr. Mamoni Raisom Goswami as a great social reformer, lover of peace and tallest Assamese writer.
During the programme, translated works of Goswami’s into various languages were released. Rare photos of her life were also displayed for public viewing at the venue. Handwriting competition among school children was also conducted to mark Children’s day.
Later, in the evening, a multi-cultural function was held paying tribute to the Assamese writer. Altogether, a 15-member delegation from Nagaland attended the programme.
NPF general secretary, Basu Damani also spoke at the programme while NPF Minority Cell president, Bishnu Bhattacharjee felicitated Assam Governor, J.B. Patnaik.
