Churches urged to work for drug addicts in Mon

October 5, 2015 | by admin

Deputy Commissioner, Mon W. Honje Konyak called upon the churches to own the responsibility and take the initiative to transform the lives of drug addicts.
He was speaking as a special guest at the opening program of De-addiction Camp 2015 organized by the Mon User’s Network at APMC campus, Mon on October 3.
Referring to the rapid raise of opium and other drugs addicts in the district, he cautioned if the churches fail to focus on the addicts and the “fallen people” at the appropriate time then a time would come when the church would have no congregation to fellowship with.
The deputy commissioner lamented that though social-economic and other infrastructural development was lagging in the district there has been a rapid rise of drug addicts.
He then congratulated the Mon Users Network for the initiative and taking the pain to find the resources for management of the camp and thus giving hope and bringing some kind of solution to the problems faced by the people.
He was optimistic that with the intervention of the Churches and the civil societies the camp will continue and become a spiritual healing center. Konyak also challenged the Mon Users’ Network not to turn back but to move forward.
Speaking on behalf of the medical department Dr. Chenjei lamented that, although everyone says drug addict is bad, none come up to rescue the addicts except for Mon Users’ Network.
Briefing on the basic idea and use of medical therapy for the camp, he said it is a short term program which may not be adequate as per the standard of the actual de-addiction camp.
He exhorted the clients to have determination and the willpower to overcome addiction and at the same time urged the parents to support their children saying the most important component for the addicts is care and support of the family.
Camp Director and founding member of Mon Users’ Network Sashi presented a brief account of camp and  informed that besides medical therapy other recreational activities like sports, song, worship etc. will also be held.
Informing that the concept of the camp is “My Responsibility” he appealed to all to be responsible and extend cooperation and support to the Users’ Network for the success of the camp.
Youth Secretary KBBB and the vice president of the Konyak Students Union Wangjah also spoke and exhorted the client and congratulated the Mon Users’ Network for the initiative.
Highlights of the programme include special number by the KBCM youth and Grace Ministry and camp dedication by the Pastor KBCM. The program started with scripture reading and invocation by Nyangpong Camp assistant director, Eunice Thalih facilitated the program. The program was held under the theme “Drugs Treatment Works”.
