Kohima College organizes lecture on ‘Naga writers’

Department of English, Kohima College organized a lecture program “Naga Writers” at its campus, Saturday wherein State Women Commission chairperson, Dr. Temsula Ao appraised the faculty and students on the definition of oral tradition in Nagaland in its broad perspectives.
Dr. Temsula observed that Nagas lack tangible culture therefore she urged Nagas to maintain “our” intangible culture such as language, indigenous knowledge, culturally significant landscapes, folk stories which are inherited from the past generation. She said it should be maintained in the present and restored for future generation.
Reciting one of her poems “The Old Story –Teller”, Dr. Temsula said Naga folktales and folklores may appear simple on the surface but has “deep inner meaning of great value”.
She asked the gathering to respect the “wisdom of our folktales and folklores” as it contains codes of moral behaviour and teaches how to live. Further, Dr. Temsula cautioned that “we” should not to lose “our” culture as it would result to losing history, territory and intrinsic identity.
Meanwhile, Kohima College media cell informed that the English Department of the college intends conducted such programmes each year to enable students to listen to live lectures from the writers whose works are included in their syllabus.
