Spelling bee championship commences

Two-day 5th Nagaland Spelling Bee Championship got underway under the aegis of Fountain Club Kohima in partnership with State Council Educational Research & Training (SCERT), Nagaland at the Capital Convention Centre Kohima on Friday.  
Commissioner and secretary for school education & SCERT, F.P. Solo in his address as the chief guest stressed on the need to encourage spelling bee competition as well as debate and literary events in the educational institutions in the state. 
He opined that Phonetic spoken English and communication skills needed to be introduced in schools.  Apart from learning word and spelling, he also encouraged the students to refer dictionary often as it also feature proper usage of pronunciation.
Encouraging learning English language, Solo said with a strong foundation in English in the state it can become educational hub for neighbouring countries like, Myanmar, Thailand, China, Korea etc. 
He also said Nagaland can send English teachers to such countries too.
Organizing committee convenor Vilekho Bio said the Fountain Club was contemplating to change the participation standard from the next edition. It will feature from Class VII to Class X against the present standard from Class VIII to XII.
SCERT Director Khrietuo Mezhiir said that after the initiation of the spelling bee contest, it has generated awareness on importance of having spelling bee event at different schools in the state. He said the contest helps the individuals to improve the spelling and pronunciation and also help to learn new word and fit into sentence. It also enhances memory power, build competitive spirit, healthy competition and confidence, he stated.
Altogether, 63 participants from Kohima, Dimapur and Peren districts are taking part in the event, which will culminate on October 8. Out of 63 participants, 34 are boys  and  29 girls from 37 educational institutions. 
The champion will win a cash prize of Rs. 60,000 while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed winners will get Rs. 40,000, Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 15, 000 respectively. Quarter finalists will receive Rs. 5000 each.
The closing function will take place on October 8 at 4 p.m with president Tenyimi Peoples’ Organization Timikha Koza as the special guest.
