Following the Home Department notification for withdrawal of all the check gates except the inter-state check gates, the state police had started withdrawing its personnel in compliance with the order. ADG (Adm) S.T Sangtam when contacted said that following the Home Department notification for withdrawal of all the check gates except the inter-state check gate, the PHQ had issued order to all the DEF to withdraw the check gates in their respective district. “As far as I know, Kohima DEF has started withdrawing but am yet to get action taken report from other district”, the ADG said.
He however admitted that with so many approach road now, there is apprehension that anti-social element might take advantage of the withdrawal situation to smuggle illegal items such as arms, ammunitions and other contraband item. He however said that the department had not made any proposal for retention of any existing inter district check gates. On any contingency plan to supplement the withdrawal of the check gates, Sangtam replied in negative but said “We’ll observe the activities and after a month or so we will come out with certain plan of action”.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that Kohima DEF has started withdrawing its personnel and repatriating them from the various check gates under its jurisdiction on phase wise manner and is hopeful of completing the process within a few days. Apart from the only inter-state check gate at Khuzama, the DEF Kohima presently man atleast four other check gate located at the outskirt of Kohima including the check gate at New Reserve Check, Peducha, BSF Camp and Merema.
