Against the backdrop of recent teachers’ appointment, the Zeliang Students’ Union (ZSU) Thursday said it did not accept the “rampant appointment” of teachers in Peren district by way of suitability test conducted by the education department on doubtful under graduate teachers whose appointments were under investigation.
The union demanded the responsible authority for immediate revocation of appointment orders and initiate recruitment in time.
In a letter addressed to director school education, the ZSU president Iteichu Zeliang stated that the union was bringing the matter to the notice of the department after taking into confidence the support and consent of the responsible village education committees, village councils and student community.
Highlighting “certain grievances” with regard to recent appointment of teachers, the union said while linguistic barrier was a major impediment to overall development of the Naga society it was also a major lacuna in the sphere of education. Pointing out that moulding up and educating a child required proper mentoring and disciplining tactics, the union said linguistic barrier comes in as the first obstacle in this regard.
Stating that Peren district itself has surplus human recourse, qualified for the job, the union said it was expedient that authorities responsible should not remain insensitive to the needs of the district and resort to rampant appointment of teachers “who are alien” to the needs of the student community in rural level concerning Peren.
Citing provisions of the Communitisation of education in Nagaland, the union said the district as well as affected villages has highly qualified eligible to take up the job and fulfill the essence of the Communitisation Act.
“The government’s insensibility to the guidelines of the Communitisation Act and subsequent appointment of teachers who do not belong to the community is indignantly resented,” the Zeliang student body said.
Further, the union stated that “this very act of malignancy” undermined and underscored the capabilities of the unemployed youths of the district.
Asserting that they demand what was rightly theirs, the ZSU said they would only accept “controversy free and qualified candidates”, native and indigenous to Peren district who are proven eligible for the job through an appropriate conduct of examination.
Meanwhile, the union underlined that further delay to redress their genuine grievances would tantamount to “justice delayed is justice denied, thereby jeopardising and leaving the academic session of a student in total disarray.”
Failure to address their genuine grievances, the union cautioned would prove counterproductive which could also invite legal recourse or unprecedented situations for which, it said the education department would be held solely responsible.
