Despite much speculations and noise over the recent state cabinet decision which recommended to the government of India, the creation of Autonomous Council for the four districts of the eastern Nagaland, the suggestion had been reportedly agreed upon by various organizations prior to it being placed before the state cabinet.
According to highly placed reliable sources from the region, various apex organizations of the four districts (ENPO areas) along with the 14 legislators excluding the six opposition legislators from the region, held consultations prior to the proposal being placed before the state cabinet. Taking into consideration of the advantages and benefits of the people, the different apex organizations had agreed to the proposal for autonomous council, it was learnt.
It may be mentioned that the state cabinet on July 23 had decided to recommend to the centre for autonomous council under the provision of the sixth schedule of the constitution of India for the four backward districts of the state encompassing the Eastern Naga Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) which include Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire and Longleng District.
However, most of the legislators from the districts, when contacted, refused to comment on the cabinet decision so far. On the other hand, there were mixed response to the state cabinet decision. While some sections of the people from the region had expressed appreciation of the cabinet decision, the others opposed to it.
It may be mentioned that the ENPO President while talking to Nagaland Post earlier appreciated the state cabinet decision and stated that the state cabinet had recognized the grievances of the of the people of the Eastern Nagaland before any situation was created. However, later the ENPO while appreciating the gesture and sagacity of the state cabinet and undeniably ground breaking, in an effort to address the memorandum of the people of the Eastern Nagaland resolved to stick to its earlier May 25 resolution taken at Tuensang headquarter demanding for full fledged state (Frontier Nagaland).
ENSF firm on statehood demand
Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) Saturday said it remained firm on the demand for a full-fledged state i.e. frontier Nagaland and nothing short of it.
ENSF, nevertheless, lauded the state cabinet’s proposal to the Centre recommending “autonomous status” for eastern Nagaland, saying the proposal has “boosted up our morale and spirit.”
In a statement, the ENSF president Hawang T. Wangsha and general secretary Changsang Soted said the federation was “strongly committed” to the statehood demand of ENPO, as reaffirmed during ENPO steering committee meeting May 15 last at Longleng town.
In the meantime, the federation also declared that any individual/group(s) /organization(s) or agencies, writing or commenting in any form, either in print/mass media, pertaining to ENPO’s demand for statehood should not be misinterpreted or misconstrued since ENPO and ENSF were strong in pursuing the statehood demand laid down to Centre under any circumstances, as it has been mandated by the general public of eastern Nagaland.
Meanwhile, the ENSF “in good faith” urged social welfare department to implement relaxation policy issued by government wherein the six tribes of eastern Nagaland were exempted from possessing diploma in computer application (subject to availing the same qualification within two years after appointment) while accepting forms in ongoing drive to recruit seven LDA posts under the department.
Further, the federation expressed hope that department would re-accept the rejected forms of the six tribes as per notification of the government.
