Dimapur District Trucks Drivers Welfare Trade Union (DDTDWTU) on Monday called for a 24-hour “total chaka bandh” within the administrative jurisdiction of Dimapur district starting 5 a.m. October 7 as its phase-I agitation.
In a press release, union president Kaiho Zhimo said that the decision to call for bandh was taken on October 5 at an emergency general meeting of the union, which deliberated on the issue of police arresting two of its bona fide members while they were on official assignment collecting Union Welfare Fund among the members. The union expressed strong resentment towards law enforcing agencies for “handling/branding” its members like criminals, interfering in the internal matters of the union and failing to disclose the complainant leading to the arrest of its registered members.
The union maintained that it has stood firmly beside the district administration in curbing illegal taxation on truckers at various entry points in Dimapur.
However, it said much to its dismay the law enforcing agencies “purely basing on assumption” swiftly arrested its members, who assigned to collect the union welfare fund, while overlooking others illegally collecting from truckers at various check gates in Dimapur.
The union asserted that should the authority wished to be enlightened about taxation/extortion by the law enforcing agencies from truck drivers at various check gates in Dimapur then it would highly obliged to publish for general consumption.
Meanwhile, the DDTDWTU has requested the general public to bear with the inconvinences that could be caused by its proposed chaka bandh on October 7.
