One day training on integrated pest management (IPM) on rice was conducted by department of agriculture Zunheboto July 25 under Zunheboto district.
At the training programme, key-note address was delivered by DAO Zunheboto G.Kiyevi Ayemi, who highlighted the objectives and importance of integrated pest management. He urged the farmers to adopt and promote eco-friendly production system towards achieving sustainable agriculture. At the technical session, resource person, agriculture officer (AO) L. Kivika Chophi conducted ballot box test for participants to assess knowledge of farmers in identifying the different pests and defenders in rice eco-system.
Resource person spoke on bio magnification of DTT in food grains and its hazardous effect to human health. He advised the farmers to discontinue DTT use for agriculture purposes in future.
In another session, AO Lutovi Sumi spoke on the importance and management of rodents (rats). He also explained in detail the nature of rodent damage, common rodenticides available and applications technique.
Altogether, 25 farmers attended the training programme where IPM kits such as swap net, bags, caps and plant protection chemicals were distributed free of cost to the farmers. Farmers expressed gratitude to the department of Agriculture for conducting farmers training on IPM for the first time in the village.
