With the spurt in cases of dengue in neigbouring states of Assam and Manipur, doctors at the distinct hospital Dimapur Friday said there were chances of one or two cases turning positive but said there was no reason to panic.

Talking to Nagaland Post, Dr. Temsu, pathologist and in-charge of blood bank, district hospital Dimapur said there was no cause for alarm and asked the public not to panic. He informed that four blood samples from suspected patients have been sent outside the state for testing.

“Results are awaited. We will get them in two or three days after that, it will be confirmed whether blood samples tested are Dengue positive or not,” said Dr. Temsu. It was also learnt that the samples had been sent to Dibrugarh, Assam as the facility at district hospital was in limbo due to a technical snag.

On measures to curb dengue, Dr. Temsu said the use of mosquito nets should be promoted so as prevent cross infection where there were confirmed dengue cases besides the use of DDT powder and sprays to prevent Aedes Aegypti mosquitoe bites.

On the status of Japanese Encephalitis (JE), Dr. Moa, district programme officer for malaria said JE cases have decreased this year compared to last year.

Between June and September 2012, two deaths have been reported — one from Niuland and the other from Diphupar against 6 deaths last year. There were 21 positive cases this year so far and this was much less than 36 cases of JE positive detected last year.

According to Dr. Moa, vulnerable areas like Niuland sub-division and Dhansiripar in and around Dimapur where there were paddy fields and stagnant water should be given special attention.
