‘World Consumer Rights Day’ observed in St. Paul School

Along with the rest of the world, St. Paul School, Phesama, Kohima observed “World Consumer Rights Day’’ on March 15under the theme “Consumer Rights in the digital age.”
The programme was organized by the department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, Kohima. Speaking on the programme, Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) president and advocate Kezhokhoto Savi deliberated on the present society wherein the consumer depends on access to reliable, affordable and safe communication networks and the danger of “digital future”.
He also briefed the gathering on the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 (“COPRA”) was enacted with the purpose of empowering consumers to take on the might of large corporations and preventing unscrupulous businessmen from taking undue advantage of the weak position which consumers are inherently placed  in under the archaic Indian judicial system.
Asserting that awareness was “lacking” in the state, Savi said that observing the day was an opportunity to create better awareness. He also spoke about a debate competition on the topic – “The State Government has not initiated enough measures to eradicate the menace of illegal taxation in the state” that was jointly organised by Kohima Law College, NVCO & ACAUT Nagaland(Legal Cell) at Kohima Law College on March 14 in the observance of ‘World Consumer Rights Day.’
