Known as Deputy Inspector of School (DIS) building earlier, and then rechristened as Sub-Divisional Education Office (SDEO) Kiphire building, constructed way back in 1974, is in a dilapidated condition. This seems to be a major problem among other problems being faced by the Education department in Kiphire.
When asked about the deplorable condition of the Sr. SDEO office building, the staff said that during rains, the computers and some files get wet due to leakage through the roof. During the windy season this year, a section of the roof was also blown away which is yet to be repaired.
The almost 50 year old, mostly wood, office building has only seven rooms without any toilets and it also has no proper fencing. More than 670 teachers with more than 90 GMS/GPS and other staff in the district are under the administration of this dilapidated office building. This year Kiphire SDEO office was trifurcated into three SDEOs: Seyochung, Pungro and Kiphire Hq. with Kiphire Hq. allotted as Sr. SDEO. However this is yet to materialize and all of them are still functioning under Sr. SDEO Kiphire. The District Education Office (DEO) and Sub-Divisional Education Office, supposed to be in the same building, are also functioning at different locations in Kiphire town.
Interestingly, the District Education Office Kiphire is functioning at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office building, away from the Sr. SDEO office. The DEO office is running in five rooms, including SSA and RMSA rooms. According the DEO staff, at least ten separate rooms are needed for proper functioning. According to DEO Kiphire, the District Education Office Kiphire is also in need of JEOs and LDAs. It is also learnt that the DEO Kiphire does not have a driver either.
