Like the saying knee jerk reaction, the Congress party responds in a similar manner only when it is compelled to. The party has again reacted only after the Punjab crisis and the Lakhimpur incident on October 3, to mull finalizing a date for holding CWC elections. In order to correct the drift, on August 24, 2020, twenty three (23)senior Congress leaders wrote a letter to Sonia urging upon her to initiate early election of CWC and full time party president. The letter was written by five former chief ministers, sitting Lok Sabha MPs Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, former Rajya Sabha member and then leader of Congress Rajya Sabha parliamentary party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, members of Congress Working Committee and over a dozen former union ministers with years of political experience. Even since 2014, the Congress has been sailing on the choppy political waters without a compass and tossed from side to side by electoral setbacks. Rahul fulfilled Sonia’s long cherished dream of stepping into the national arena when he was “elected” as president of the party in 2017. Rahul was made as the lone star campaigner and party’s undeclared prime ministerial candidate during the 2014 parliamentary elections. He flopped but was still made the president in 2017 because the loyalists and sycophants can see none beyond the family. Then Rahul chose to look like a martyr when he resigned on July 3, 2019 after the party’s electoral drubbing. In reality, he chose to run away and went on vacation under the pretext of ‘owning moral responsibility’ at a time when the party could have done without such a drama. After he resigned Sonia was forced out of retirement by the family loyalist-packed CWC, to take up the responsibility as ‘interim president’ on August 11,2019. The post Sonia presently holds ‘interim president’ does not exist in the Congress party constitution but created to facilitate the Gandhis and prevent any non-Gandhi from entering even the precincts of the family court. Even so, an interim president cannot be expected to remain beyond three to six months; which means elections should have been held by end of 2019 or even by January 2020. Fortunately, for the courtiers of the Congress, the covid-19 pandemic may have come as a blessing in disguise as it provided the best excuse of not having the CWC election for the party president till today. The question is who will be ‘selected’ and not elected by the family loyalists if at all, the CWC election actually take place? It is a shame that a party that had led Indians against the colonial rulers, is today reduced to a family party limited. It is clear Rahul will be named by the loyalists as their unanimous choice for party president. Though Rahul pretends he does not want to be president, yet in reality, it is he who still runs the party without any designation. Also, it should be noted that Rahul is not only a poor orator but what Modi described- he may have grown physically but not mentally. No one can ever forget the tamasha Rahul enacted in parliament on July 20,2018 when he went and hugged Modi and then winked at Jyotiraditya Scinda, as if to mean he was jesting. If the Congress is serious about politics, it needs to do away with flippancy and sycophancy.
