In the interest of public safety and order, deputy commissioner (DC) Kohima Shanavas C has prohibited permanent and temporary structures and activities that encroached National Highways (NHs) with immediate effect.
In an order dated January 12, the DC warned that necessary action would be initiated against those violating the order under the ‘Control of National Highways (Land & Traffic) Act, 2002’. The order noted that due to the encroachment of the national highways by street vendors, hawkers, etc, smooth vehicle traffic flow and pedestrian movement had been greatly affected.
DC said that NHs were being encroached upon through construction of permanent and temporary structures by individuals/parties, causing grave concern for road safety and future road upgrade projects, besides posing dangers like road accidents, stampede, etc.
