Celebrating the theme, ‘Promoting community and Environmental Sustainability’, North East Institute of Social Science & Research, (NEISSR) commemorated “International Social Work Day” on March 21 at the Institute conference hall.
Explaining the concept of social work as a helping profession, principal, Rev. Dr. C.P. Anto, encouraged the social work trainees that to help somebody, “we need to develop our intellect, our skills and our attitude so as to reorient ourselves towards helping every individual that we come across to experience the same transformation”.
He stated that social work trainees should think beyond their own community or tribal affinity and move towards a broader horizon where they could help and empower individuals irrespective of their tribes, colour, status, and belief etc. Short plays on the concept of social work as ‘teaching a man to fish, rather than giving fish’ which epitomized the value of social work profession were presented by the students of Youth Development and Peace & Conflict Transformation Studies specializations.
The highlights of the programme included a play on the importance of environmental conservation by students of Community Development and a song by the students of second semester MSW.
