The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has condemned the February 23 bomb blast at the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) premises in DM University Campus, Thangmeiband, Imphal. The blast that occurred around 9.30 pm resulted in the death of Oinam Kenejy and seriously injuring Salam Michael, both students of DM College.

The apex body of eight students’ associations also expressed serious concern over the series of the events unfolding in the office of prominent social organisation United Committee Manipur (UCM) and the Macha Leima School being burned down, besides the vandalising of other social organisations’ offices, ransacking and vandalising the residence of Sinam Prakash, NESO adviser.

The NESO claimed that AMSU as a premier students’ organisation had always maintained a non-political identity and never condoned violence in any form. It stressed that it was very important for the general public at this critical juncture to guide and ensure that the AMSU continued to remain a non-political organisation committed to a non-violent movement.

Pointing out that these events had created confusion and fear psychosis in the minds of the students and general public, the NESO called for calm and sense to prevail so that normalcy could be restored, while at the same time strongly urging the government to deal with the situation with all the seriousness it deserved for maintaining law and order and to bring the perpetrators to book.

The organisation stressed that the government should continue with the ongoing peace process and take initiatives at the same time to have dialogue with all armed groups for a political solution that was acceptable to all for the protection and uplift of the indigenous people of Manipur, resulting in a lasting peace.

The organisation said the peace mission it had initiated last year during the violence in Manipur would continue, adding that it believed that all stakeholders concerned would take cognisance and support the initiative. This was stated in a press release by NESO chairman Samuel B Jyrwa and secretary general Mutsikhoyo Yhobu.
