Sleepy Joe and lying Trump

President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance has raised serious concerns among many Democrats about the November 2024 election if he remains the candidate. The 81-year-old has shown signs of mental decline in recent years, including displaying erratic behaviour at political events. During the debate, a hoarse-sounding President Biden delivered a shaky, halting performance, stumbling over his words on several occasions. Some Democrats privately expressed concerns that this could be a disqualifying factor. In contrast, former President Trump repeated a series of well-worn falsehoods, including claims that migrants have caused a crime wave, that Democrats support infanticide, and that he actually won the 2020 election. Nonetheless, the race for the White House in November 2024 has reached an interesting stage. According to a flash poll after Thursday’s debate, 67% of registered voters said that Trump won the debate compared with just 33% who thought Biden came out on top. Biden’s stumbling performance in the debate against former President Donald J. Trump has some Democrats considering the possibility of nominating an alternative candidate. High on their list is Vice President Kamala Harris, whose role as Biden’s running mate makes her a convenient option for delegates during challenging times. However, despite being the automatic choice to replace Biden as president, Harris’s name does not resonate across the Democratic party. Kamala Harris’s team is concerned that Democrats will install a white candidate ahead of her to replace Joe Biden, arguing that it would be “offensive” to black voters to overlook her should the president stand aside. While prominent figures like former President Barack Obama have tried to downplay the significance of Biden’s poor showing, the concerns persist. The New York Times wrote that one of the strongest voices imploring Biden to resist pressure to drop out was his son Hunter, who on June 11 became the first child of a sitting president to be convicted of a felony after a jury found him guilty of lying about illegal drug use when he purchased a handgun in 2018.There are many Democrats who have now come up with the name of Michelle Obama, wife of former president Barack Obama to replace Biden. As per a Newsweek report, the odds of Michelle Obama stepping in as a replacement have surged, reflecting both her enduring popularity and the party’s search for a candidate who can unite voters and present a strong challenge to Donald Trump. A candidate switch would most likely require Biden to withdraw from the race, something his campaign insists he has no intention of doing. The risks of such a move are significant. Many of the highest-profile potential stand-ins have never undergone the rigorous vetting and challenges of a presidential race. Historically, numerous candidates who appeared promising on paper faltered on the campaign trail. The race for the White House in November 2024 looks set to be as controversial as interesting if Biden is forced to withdraw from the race and if that happens, it will be something that will invite scrutiny on the US electoral system.
