NSRLM Block Mission Management Unit (BMMU) Wozhuro block, under Wokha district, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Wokha, conducted a one-day training and demonstration on Homestead Gardening for Food and Nutrition at Sankiton, Wozhuro on October 3. The training aimed to empower Self Help Groups to practice sustainable gardening methods to enhance food security and also maintain a balance diet.

The event saw participation of 30 trainees from various SHGs who gained valuable insights on homestead gardening practices. Chief Technical Officer of KVK Wokha, Mhalo Tungoe, emphasized on the importance of Nutri Gardens encouraging households to adopt systematic gardening methods.

Tungoe stressed that Nutri Gardens can significantly improve food security and health within the community, especially among economically disadvantaged households. She pointed out that by growing their own vegetables, families can reduce their reliance on market bought produce, thereby cutting down on expenses while ensuring the consumption of fresh, organic, homegrown food.

Tungoe also explained on how one can practice systemic gardening even in congested space encouraging Self Help Groups (SHGs) to make kitchen gardening a part of their daily routines.

It was also announced that the trained SHGs will now establish a community kitchen garden at Sankiton, and the produce from the garden is to be distributed among economically disadvantaged households, ensuring access to fresh and nutritious food.
To support this initiative, the SHGs received seeds such as green peas and other seasonal seeds, along with various essential gardening tools.
