Naga Council Dimapur(NCD) is indeed a vital organization that emerged in response to the growing population of Nagas and various communities in Dimapur. It was the need of the hour of Civil Society Organization to protect and safeguard the common interests of the Nagas, to promote peace & harmony and to oversee the welfare of diverse communities. Thus, NCD was formed to address the pressing need for unity of the Nagas and among the diverse communities in Dimapur for peaceful coexistence.
Naga Council Dimapur has its own Office building located in the heart of Dimapur city. Historically, its operational jurisdiction covered the entire foothill areas of Dimapur district. However, in recent trifurcation of Dimapur district into three separate districts – Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland – NCD has unanimously reorganized its jurisdiction accordingly. Now, NCD is functioning as a public welfare office operating with a strong commitment to inclusiveness, transparency and accountability.
Today, Naga Council Dimapur serves as a leading organization with 24 affiliates of Dimapur based tribal Hohos/Unions (16 tribes from Nagaland, 4 from South Naga and 4 prominent CSOs in Dimapur (NWHD, DNSU, GB Union Dimapur & DUCCF). All these affiliates with one heart under NCD umbrella, with Motto “All in One”.
NCD is recognized as a legitimate and respected organization, a non-governmental and a non-political organization dedicated itself to promoting justice among the citizens.
Naga Council Dimapur plays a vital role in assisting the local administration and police in maintaining law and order, safeguarding human rights, and upholding peace and harmony, particularly in Dimapur city and district, and more broadly across Nagaland state. NCD operates within its comprehensive constitution that ensures to promote social and cultural values of the people by showcasing cultural activities of all tribal and non-tribal communities without bias or discrimination reflecting its commitment to equality and fairness for everyone under its jurisdiction.
Today, we have gathered here to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Naga Council Dimapur, under the theme “Celebrating Naga Unity.” The theme itself reflects the foundation of the NCD, which is the unification of all Naga tribes living in Dimapur district, regardless of their origin. Dimapur is a unique district in Nagaland, serving as a shared space for all Naga tribes and a commercial hub for all citizens. In this diverse setting, Naga Council Dimapur plays a pivotal role in bringing together different communities into a cohesive and harmonious society.
Naga Council Dimapur’s invaluable service is widely appreciated by all sections of society, including the local administration, lawmakers, the business community, institutions, and various government departments. NCD actively participates in reconciling approach in any conflict resolution among different Naga political groups, individuals or societal organizations. NCD never hesitates in addressing social issues and matters of public interest that arises from time to time. Its efforts in fostering, understanding, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence have made it a respected and trusted entity in Dimapur and beyond.
Immovable Assets of Naga Council Dimapur.
Naga Council Dimapur has acquired and established immovable properties and assets in Dimapur to generate its own sort of income and to manage its day to day activities. These assets are:
1) Naga Council Plot at NyamoLotha Road, Dimapur:
It has an area of about 03K, with two commercial buildings that were constructed by tenants on a lease basis. NCD occupies the 3rd floor of the main road commercial building as its head office. This location serves as the central hub for its operations and administration to facilitate public interests.
2) Naga Council Mhalie Memorial Market Complex, East Police Colony, Dimapur:
It has an area of about 04 Bighas. The entire commercial buildings on this plot are constructed by tenants on a lease basis. An undeveloped area of about 2Bigha which contains a natural water reservoir has been reserved for the construction of a multi-utility building. This future development is intended to be carried out with the support of a generous funding agency.
3) Old Naga Cemetery at Lake View Colony, Khermahal, Dimapur:
It has an area of about 19Bighas which is the final resting place for about 3,000 individuals, including Naga pioneers and distinguished public leaders. As the cemetery is now fully occupied, the burial of bodies has been completely banned until further notice.
Ao SensoTelonjem Dimapur:
In commemoration of the Naga Council’s Platinum Jubilee, the AoSensoTelongjem Dimapur (ASTD) has generously undertaken the beautification of this historic cemetery through a Memorandum of Understanding with Naga Council Dimapur vide Reged No.21/2022 dated 08/03/2022.
Naga Council Dimapur extends its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to AoSensoTelongjem Dimapur for the noble initiative in beautifying the Old Naga Cemetery. A 250-foot-long, 10-foot-width Sky-Bridge with a 70-foot-tall prayer tower at its center has been constructed in the cemetery. This iconic structure, made possible through generous donations from well-wishers and support from the Government of Nagaland, provides a panoramic overview of the cemetery and a serene space for prayer services to honour the departed souls.
This noble gesture by ASTD will be remembered as an outstanding achievement in the history of the Naga Council Dimapur, reflecting their commitment to preserving and honoring the legacy of the community.
4) New Naga Cemetery at Zani village (18 Bighas):
Since the burial ground in Old Naga Cemetery, Lake View Colony Dimapur was exhausted to the last inch at this crucial momemt, Naga Council Dimapur had apprised the acute problem of the public to most respected Shri. Neiphiu Rio, the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of Nagaland. Then in 2005, the Hon’ble Chief Minister, prioritizing the welfare of the public donated 18 Bighas of land at Zani Village, which is a few kilometers away from Purna Bazar Dimapur. As on today, 2336 dead have laid to rest in this New Naga Cemetery with honour and dignity. For this act of compassion, Naga Council Dimapur is immensely grateful to Shri. Neiphiu Rio, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Govt. of Nagaland. The present cemetery is also filling up due to sudden surged of covid-19, NCD is still looking forward to this concern for the citizens of Dimapur.
Development of New Naga Cemetery at Zani Area, Dimapur.
The development of the New Naga Cemetery was made possible through the dedicated initiative of Shri. NiholuAyemi, who raised funds from well-wishers to make the cemetery operational during the critical period of the COVID-19 surge in 2020. His efforts led to the provision of solar lights by the Government of Nagaland, enhancing the cemetery’s appearance and honoring those laid to rest. Shri. Niholu Ayemi’s family also generously sponsored the ground water development, ensuring a sustainable water supply for the cemetery supporting its ongoing development. Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) is deeply grateful to him and his family for their commitment to the welfare of Dimapur citizens.
NCD also extends heartfelt appreciation to all generous donors and well-wishers who contributed to the development of the New Naga Cemetery at Zani Village.
Lotha Baptist Church Dimapur and Lotha Youth Organization Dimapur
Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) also expresses profound appreciation and acknowledgment to the Lotha Baptist Church Dimapur and the Lotha Youth Organization Dimapur for their generous contribution in sponsoring the construction cost of 20 tombs with RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) structures. This initiative was specifically aimed at supporting the poor and needy families who faced not only emotional toll of losing their loved ones but also financial burden for funeral expenses. This act of compassion and solidarity exemplifies the spirit of community service and unity among the Naga society, reflecting the collective effort to care for one another during the times of crisis.
5) New Naga Council Plot:
A new plot with an area of 1(one) Bigha under Block No.9 was allotted to the Naga Council Dimapur in 2010-11. However, it has not been developed yet.
Naga Council Bench:
Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has established a Customary Council Bench, which is led by Shri. G K Rengma, Vice President Council Bench. This bench is responsible for addressing and resolving cases of any issues received from the individual or communities. The resolution process is grounded in Naga customary laws and social practices, reflecting the traditional methods of dispute resolution and justice in the society.

Their foresighted and dedication have guided us to this significant point, showcasing the incredible achievements of the NCD. Their legacy continues to inspire and motivate us as we strive to fulfil our mission. Throughout these decades, we remained steadfast in our dedication, promoting justice, equality, and social welfare. From advocating for the rights of the marginalized to spearheading initiatives for sustainable development and empowerment, our commitment to address the pressing issues of our time has never wavered.
As we look back on our journey, we also look forward with renewed determination. We pledge to continue our efforts with the same fervour and dedication that has brought us this far. Together, let us honour the past and embrace the future, striving to make a lasting impact and uphold the values that have guided us for the past 75 years.
On this great event, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the founding members and successive Office Bearers of the NCD. Your vision, diligence and hard work have laid a strong foundation that has enabled us to reach this significant milestone. Your contributions have been invaluable in shaping the legacy of the Naga Council Dimapur.
I also profoundly grateful to all the Chairmen and Presidents of Tribal Hohos and Unions, as well as their community members. Your collaboration and support have been appreciated. A special thanks to all the leaders of Tribal and Non-Tribal Civil Society Organizations from Dimapur and the neighbouring districts that have recently bifurcated from Dimapur. Your partnership has strengthened our collective efforts and expanded our impact.
To my esteemed colleagues, Office Bearers, and Hon’bleCouncillors of NCD, I offer my deepest gratitude to you all. Your dedication and teamwork continue to drive our progress and uphold the values of our Naga Council. As we step in-into the centenary of the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD), let us embrace the powerful truth that“Unity in Humanity” holds the greatest potential to create a better tomorrow.
