ICFAI University Nagaland (IUN) organized an awareness talk on the “Harmful Effects of Tobacco on Health,” featuring presentations by Dr. N Moa Jamir, Senior Dental Surgeon, and Imkumla Aier, Psychologist, from the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Dimapur. The event, held on campus on November 4, aimed to educate students and staff about the dangers of tobacco use.
The program began with a welcome address by Elmie K Rengma, faculty-in-charge of the Health Club at IUN. She introduced the guest speakers and emphasized the university’s commitment to promoting health awareness. Rovikotuo Yhoshu, chairman of the Anti-Ragging and Disciplinary Committee, also addressed the gathering, highlighting measures the university has implemented to reduce tobacco use on campus.
Dr. Moa’s presentation explored the various forms of tobacco consumption, including smoking and smokeless tobacco, detailing the severe health, psychological, social, and economic consequences associated with its use.
Aier expanded on the health impacts, noting that smoking remains a leading cause of cancer in both men and women.
She also discussed the dangers of passive smoking, its adverse effects on reproductive health, and the broader environmental implications.
Following the presentations, attendees took a pledge to reject tobacco use, underscoring their commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
