Battle in political arena

The Indian political landscape is undergoing a significant transformation as the Congress party struggles to regain its footing amidst a fiercely competitive environment. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have been vigorously campaigning for the Delhi Assembly elections, the Congress’s delayed and lackluster campaign has raised questions about its leadership and strategy. The Congress launched its campaign on January 14, 2024, after the return of its ‘travelling leader’ Rahul Gandhi shoes penchant for disappearing abroad has become a feature and which speaks volumes about the state of the party’s affairs. Rahul Gandhi, the party’s de facto leader, along with other prominent figures like Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has been notably absent from the campaign trail. This absence underscores the party’s over reliance on Rahul Gandhi, since no other leader dares to take up the charge and suffer the consequences of the ire of the entire family loyalists who pack the ‘high command’. Rahul’s rhetoric has also grown repetitive, focusing primarily on criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gautam Adani, and Mukesh Ambani. In Delhi, his attacks have shifted more toward the AAP than the BJP, a strategy that could backfire. By targeting AAP, Rahul risks alienating voters who see the AAP as the main challenger to the BJP. This approach leaves the Congress vulnerable to blame, irrespective of whether AAP or BJP emerges victorious. Moreover,the 54-year old Rahul’s self-proclaimed “youth leader” image, often portrayed in sleeveless T-shirts even during winter, appears disconnected from the realities of governance and leadership. It would be a little help if he realize that even attire matters with respect to imaging making since he probably feels he’s the party’s prime ministerial face. Many senior leaders may be squirming as their leader’s narrative appears amateurish and often invites embarrassing backlash. A party cannot go one step forward and two steps backward in this manner.The Congress’s predicament is further exacerbated by its isolation within the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties formed to counter the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. While alliance partners like the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Samajwadi Party (SP) have extended their support to the AAP in Delhi, the Congress finds itself sidelined. This rejection highlights the party’s dwindling relevance and inability to adapt to modern political dynamics. For the Congress, the Delhi elections may mark another chapter in its gradual decline. The party’s refusal to undergo internal reforms and its reliance on outdated narratives have rendered it increasingly irrelevant. The AAP, on the other hand, is waging a high-stakes battle against the BJP, leveraging its governance record in Delhi. The BJP, determined to reclaim the capital, has marshaled its formidable electoral machinery, making the election a test of its proven capability. As the BJP and AAP dominate the political discourse, the Congress’s inability to project a strong leadership or coherent strategy underscores its existential crisis. Unless the party embraces meaningful change, it risks fading into political oblivion, leaving the grand old party’s legacy as a relic of the past.
