Music is not just an art form but a blend of mathematics, history, science, and a universal language that unites people across the globe.

On February 9, Golden Crown Theological College (GCTC) in Dimapur had the honor of hosting Sonia Khan, the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) Representative for India and Director of the Indian Youth Orchestra, for a comprehensive session on the future of music education. The session also emphasized ABRSM’s role in nurturing young musicians.

Khan highlighted the intersection between rhythm and mathematics and discussed how structured music education contributes significantly to brain development. Her presentation underscored the vital role that music plays in shaping every aspect of life, from intellectual growth to emotional and social well-being.

The session at GCTC was the first in a series of meetings scheduled across Nagaland. On February 10, similar sessions will be held in Kohima and Wokha, followed by Mokokchung on February 11, 2025.

As the ABRSM regional center for Nagaland, Golden Crown Theological College is spearheading efforts to advance music education in the region. Mhathung Odyuo serves as the Honorary Local Representative, and GCTC also functions as the Unproctored Exam Center for online theory exams in Nagaland.

Looking ahead, face-to-face practical exams are scheduled for November 2025, with examiners coming from the UK. These exams will be held in Dimapur at GCTC, with new centers opening in Kohima, Wokha, Mokokchung, and Zunheboto. Additionally, a workshop with a UK-based examiner will be held in Dimapur in November.

Music schools and teachers are encouraged to contact local representatives Mhathung Odyuo (+91 7085836852) and Benry (+91 9380139266) for more details about the upcoming exams.

In a move that sets ABRSM apart, the board integrates UCAS points with regulatory bodies like Ofqual and CEA, ensuring strict fairness and integrity in the examination process.

During practical exams, examiners are connected to a system that allows two additional examiners in the UK to listen in and authenticate results, ensuring that no foul play occurs. This level of scrutiny is unique to ABRSM, offering unparalleled transparency and fairness.

ABRSM examiners also undergo regular re-qualification processes, including licensing exams and mandatory Grade 8 tests on new instruments every four years, ensuring their continued expertise and credibility.

Through this collaboration, GCTC and its representatives are working to bring world-class music education closer to aspiring musicians in the region. With increased global recognition and new opportunities, the future of music education in Nagaland looks brighter than ever.

In addition to the session with Sonia Khan, the event also featured music proprietors, teachers, and students, who came together to explore the expanding possibilities within music education.
