NU to introduce fine arts course to preserve art and culture

2nd National Level Stone Sculpture Camp 2009, a 15 day camp organized by North East Zone Cultural (NEZCC) at its complex in Dimapur, concluded on May 15. The closing valedictory function held at the NEZCC premises was graced by Prof. K. Kannan, Vice – Chancellor, Nagaland University who distributed certificates and mementoes to the participating sculptors and assistants. In his brief speech, Prof. Kannan said that the sculpture spoke volumes of the skill and dedication of the artists. He also mentioned that the Nagaland University will provide facilities to encourage interested young artists in the state by introducing a Fine Arts course to preserve the arts and culture and its heritage.
Altogether 40 sculptors with assistants representing West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur, North Central Zone Cultural Centre, Allahabad, North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, South Central Zone Cultural Centre, Nagpur , East Zone Cultural Centre, Kolkata beside from NEZCC member States of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya Nagaland and Tripura participated in the camp. An International awardee, three National awardees, a President awardee, five State awardees and two young talented artistes awardees also participated in the Workshop.
At the closing function, a brief report of the workshop was given by Veswuzo Phesao, exhibition officer and officer in charge of the workshop.
The participants were given time to share their views and experiences of their participation at the workshop. Earlier the function began with a Lotha folk songs presented by Narsen Cultural Club, Diphupar besides presentations by Guru Lanu Pongen, Guru Hetoli Achumi, Guru Zuhunyo Puro and Guru Gaingtanliu.
The programme was chaired by M. Sentinunsang Ao, Deputy Director, NEZCC while the vote of thanks was pronounced by Hekali Zhimomi (IAS) Director, NEZCC who stated that NEZCC had plans of creatinge a sculpture garden at its complex in the near future. Coinciding with the closing function of the workshop Prof. K. Kannan felicitated Bendangtemsu, a young artist from Nagaland who had been selected for the Young Talented Artistes Award 2008 – 2009 by the NEZCC in the discipline of theatre.
