Friends of 80 Plus Kohima Village celebrated its 20th foundation day at Marocchino Hall, Christ the King, Kohima Village. The event honored the village’s elderly residents and emphasized their invaluable contributions to the community.
Tepul Hepovi, president of the Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO), attended as the special guest. In his address, Hepovi lauded the initiative, expressing happiness that the tradition of honoring elders has now entered its 20th year.
He noted the declining number of elderly in villages, describing it a concerning trend, but found encouragement in the strong turnout at the event. He prayed for God’s blessings on the elders, wishing them good health and long life.
Hepovi commended the leadership and elders of Kohima Village for fostering unity, integrity, and solidarity, qualities that have made the village a model for other communities.
Reflecting on its historic embrace of Christianity, he acknowledged the elders’ role in spreading the gospel and preserving this legacy. He further expressed gratitude to them for donating land to establish Nagaland’s state capital, creating a welcoming and scenic home for multiple communities.
Describing elders as sources of wisdom, vision, and blessings, Hepovi credited them as the cornerstone of the community’s progress. He urged them to impart their knowledge to younger generations, emphasizing that academic qualifications alone are incomplete without the depth of traditional wisdom and lived experiences.
Earlier, the event chaired by Khrietuo Pienyii began with an invocation by Rev. Dr. Ruokuovilie Sachü, pastor of Khedi Baptist Church. Kevitsu Yhome presented the annual report, while Rev. Khrieneilie Sachü, senior pastor of BRCK, offered prayers for the elders. Fr. C.M. Joseph, parish priest of Christ the King Church, led the meal prayer.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Vizolie Suokhrie. Meanwhile, to mark the day, Kohima Village Doctors Association provided free medical check-ups for all elderly attendees.
It may be noted that Friends of 80 Plus was formed by a group of like-minded citizens in Kohima village to create a platform where young people can celebrate the presence of grandparents and elders.
