The Sevic Senior Citizens Home at Etsutchukha Colony, Wokha, was inaugurated virtually on May 2, 2025 by President of India Droupadi Murmu from New Delhi, as part of a nationwide initiative to strengthen elderly care infrastructure. Similar homes were also launched in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
The event marked a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to ensure dignified living and support for senior citizens. During the launch, President Murmu unveiled the Senior Citizen Welfare Portal, aimed at streamlining access to various welfare schemes and support services for elderly individuals.
Murmu also distributed Assisted Living Devices under the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana, an initiative designed to improve the quality of life for the elderly by providing essential aids for mobility and daily activities.
The program also saw the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and Brahma Kumaris, enabling collaborative programs focused on holistic well-being, moral support, and active social engagement for senior citizens.
The launch event featured a pledge-taking ceremony and an address by Dr. Virendra Kumar, minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, reaffirming the government’s commitment to inclusive development and elderly welfare.
Earlier, Amit Yadav, Secretary of the department of Social Justice and Empowerment, in a welcome address, emphasized the importance of creating support systems tailored to the needs of the ageing population.
Speaking at the event, District Welfare Officer, Wokha, C. James Ezung, expressed optimism that the long-awaited senior citizens’ home would help address key challenges faced by the elderly in Wokha.
He highlighted that the home, implemented under a central scheme by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and locally overseen by the Department of Social Welfare, was a much-needed facility for the district.
