Eco Warriors Nagaland Team, in coordination with the Zoo officials, rescued a Slow Loris and an Asian Leaf Turtle from different locations in Dimapur and Chumoukedima districts and handed them over to Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP) for rehabilitation.
According to Eco Warriors, the Asian Leaf Turtle (Cyclemys dentata) was found near Shitovi village, Chumoukedima, while the Slow Loris was rescued from Indisen village, Dimapur. Upon receiving information, the Eco Warriors team, in coordination with NZP officials, rushed to both locations, safely rescuing and transferring the animals for proper care.
The Asian Leaf Turtle, native to northeastern India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar, prefers slow-moving freshwater bodies. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and illegal trade, and is protected under India’s Wildlife Protection Act. Conservation efforts include habitat restoration and awareness campaigns to discourage its trade.
The Slow Loris, found in South and Southeast Asia, is the only venomous primate. These solitary, nocturnal creatures live in trees, using their large eyes for night vision. Their slow movements help them hunt prey like insects and small vertebrates.
Eco Warriors Nagaland expressed gratitude to the informants for their commitment to wildlife conservation and urged the public to support awareness efforts to protect endangered species.
