A significant step in livestock development was marked with the inauguration of the Semi-Intensive Mithun Farm Unit at Lokak Phai, Longleng, aimed at promoting scientific Mithun rearing and strengthening tribal livelihoods.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Dr. Girish Patil S, Director of ICAR – National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, who unveiled the monolith.
In his address, Dr. Patil emphasized the importance of scientific farming practices, cautioning against risks such as inbreeding depression, Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), and parasite infections. He stressed the need for vaccination, genetic diversity, and improved fodder availability.
Dr. Patil advised farmers to register on the ICAR Mithun portal for online sales and government support. He also encouraged the adoption of artificial insemination for genetic improvement and proposed the establishment of a Mithun-based Ecopark in Longleng to promote eco-tourism and conservation.
The initiative was backed by ICAR-KVK, Longleng, under Dr. Homeswar Kalita, head of ICAR-HORC, Nagaland Centre, and Dr. Hari Charan Kalita, senior scientist and head of KVK.
The experts highlighted the importance of balanced feeding, breeding management, timely deworming, and health check-ups, reaffirming their commitment to empowering tribal farmers with advanced technologies and training.
The programme, chaired by P. Chuthai Phom, began with an invocation by pastor A. Leitok Phom and a welcome address by P. Moilei Phom, president of MFAH.
Dignitaries present included Longcha Phom, chairman H/C; Pukyung Phom, political leader; Dr. Hari Charan Kalita; Dr. Homeswar Kalita; and chief guest W. Manpai, deputy commissioner of Longleng.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by S. Niamkai Phom, followed by a benediction mass and a community lunch.
