Officials from the North Eastern Council (NEC), Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER), visited the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre (NGISRSC) at the Planning & Transformation Department, Secretariat, Kohima, on May 15. The delegation, led by NEC members Tenzing Norbu Thongdok and Longki Phangcho, assessed NEC-supported initiatives in the state.
According to a DIPR report, the officials urged the department to systematically capture and update spatial data and store all development projects under NEC-funded schemes. They also advised expanding efforts to include cadastral mapping, life-saving drug logistics, and road connectivity to health centers in the state.
Acknowledging the department’s efforts, Thongdok encouraged collaboration with other states to share technological innovations and best practices.
Senior Director of NGISRSC, Mhathung Kithan, presented the department’s activities and its role in supporting governance and decision-making through geospatial technology. The delegation reviewed the Geospatial Plan for Governance & Sustainable Development, which emphasizes data-driven governance.
The visit featured hands-on demonstrations, showcasing key initiatives such as: A Geospatial Command & Facilitation Centre for interdepartmental coordination and data dissemination; Web-based centralized Geospatial Units operational across 15 stakeholder departments; and UAV-acquired high-resolution imagery of 13 urban stations for enhanced monitoring and decision-making.
The NEC team also toured the drone division, witnessing UAV applications in research, planning, and monitoring. They commended the innovative integration of UAV technology and its potential for improved regional governance.
The visit concluded with commendation for NGISRSC’s contributions to the geospatial sector, particularly its role in promoting interdepartmental collaboration, decision support, and governance through advanced mapping technologies.
