Prince William and Prince Harry’s security could soon be scaled down after the Scotland Yard has ordered a review of their protection costs, a leading British newspaper has claimed.
William and Harry currently get 24-hour protection, that costs some 50 million pounds a year.
But senior police officers have questioned whether the high price could be justified given the Royals’ frequent party hopping habits. Another strain was put on their security when Harry and William joined the armed forces and instantly became targets for terrorists, the Daily Star reported. The review has been welcomed by the former head of the Scotland Yard’s Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Squad, who said there was “no direct threat” to the Royals when he was in charge of the squad.
“I think it is perfectly right to ask the question why we are doing it. Is it justified when we are sending soldiers to Afghanistan who’re not properly equipped? Why don’t we give priority to people who really do need protecting?” Dai Davies was quoted as saying.
