Security forces have launched a massive rescue operation in Western Meghalaya in an attempt to rescue a Meghalaya government official and his driver, abducted by Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants, an official said Saturday. On September 30, about five armed GNLA rebels abducted R. Syngkon, district transport officer of East Garo Hills district, and his driver from the former’s official residence in Williamnagar. “The search operation is on and we are putting all efforts to rescue the abducted persons safely,” East Garo Hills district police chief Sylvester Nongtynger said.
