Asserting that United States was “very concerned” with the ongoing violence in parts of India, deputy public affairs officer, Elizabeth Thornhill, Tuesday said United States feels it is their obligation to explore where there are incidents and articulated that the US express sympathy about the incident.
Interacting with pressmen here at Hotel Saramati, Thronhill also discussed about the Fulbright Commission-an American exchange programme for students, academicians and professionals and noted that she would put up proposals to accommodate applicants from north-east states on priority.
The US official relating on current US poll said the objective of disseminating the information about the current poll scenario was to illustrate the value of democracy in action. She expressed hope to have a public diplomacy and mutual understanding between two largest democratic countries in the world.
Thornhill discoursed on several bilateral issues pertaining to region and country as a whole.
Earlier on the day, the visiting official also had an interaction with Dimapur District Ladies’ Club (DDLC) followed by a visit to the ongoing ‘Handloom trade fair’ at Dimapur Club. During an interaction Thornhill spoke about women in politics, the American Presidential elections and how women have been empowered in the US.
During her meeting with the DDLC, she discussed on affirmation of blacks in American society and how it was debated in the US in past.
DDLC members who attended the meet included Nini Sekhose, club president, Sivi Zakiesato, vice president, Sentila Alem, joint secretary, Hokhuli Sema, general secretary and Ethel Kikon, member DDLC.
