Dimapur range level police debate on human rights

Dimapur Range level debate for police personnel on “Law enforcers inclined on abuse of power rather than human touch on human rights issue” was held at the police conference hall Chumukedima, Thursday.

To promote awareness on Human Right Issues and Sensitization among the Police personnels, the state Police would also be conducting debate at various district, Range and finally State level competition, where Police officers, men and women from the rank of constables to DSPs and Commandants can participate in the competition.

In Dimapur, altogether eight participants took part (four from each two team) compromising of police personnel. The team for the motion included ABSIs Mhonyamo Kikon, Mhiesevino,Viloto S. Chishi and ASI Khumtsa Magh, while those against the motion were ABSI Noklenmar Jamir, ASI Tinkhovie Kuki and Hav. R. Elanthung Lotha and Imtiwati Ao.

Mhonyamo Kikon emerged as the winner, second place was taken by Mhiesevino and third place by R. Elanthung Lotha.
Out of the eight participants, four have been selected to represent the range in the state level debate competition scheduled for November 25 at Chumukedima that includes– Mhonyamo Kikon, Mhiesevino, R. Elanthung Lotha and Noklenmar Jamir.

Panel of judges included Meren jamir, Cmdt 15 (IR) Mahila Bn, Aochuba Yaden, News Editor Nagaland Post and S.P (BDR) Y. Etsumngo Ngullie.

Introductory speech was delivered by DIGP (R) K. Elias Lotha.
The team for the motion stressed on the importance human rights awareness among uniformed personnel. The team said there was no one above the law and as police personnel, needed more human approach while dealing with public, criminals and even under immense pressure. Other areas like custodial death, molestation/abuse in police stations, public harassment were also discussed.

The opposing team while countering said uniformed personnel were always tagged in a negative image even while carrying out duties.

The team while justifying their stand said instead we as the law enforcers try to catch hold of those criminals who violate human rights- terrorist, traffickers etc. Also while conducting MVCP’s (checking) of hundreds of vehicles in a day; the team said they face different kinds of people where some do not co-operate and create unnecessary situations.
