‘Blek’ from Mumbai, who are currently on a tour to North-East India called “Mumbai Punk Attack Tour” for the promotion of their EP release mesmerized the crowd during a live performance at Jumping Bean Cafe, Dimapur on Monday.
This young Mumbai trio is in the same league as another one of time out’s favorite trios, the lightyears explode- both bands are great at making breakneck punk rock, but what TLE achieves in lyrics, Blek achieves in catchy guitar hooks and distorted basslines on songs like ‘Hexes+Drama and “the life aquatic with Steve Zissou”.
Their five track debut EP was launched in mid-February and has been on the play list ever since. In some parts they sound like Nirvana, as in the bassline of “running into walls occasionally helps”. Yet, past the halfway mark, the song spirals into an almost techno tempo showing that this band wants to have a lot more fun than that ‘90s grunge act.
Varoon Aiyer (drummer with spilt) has been known to shake things up. Responsible for split’s reverberating, high energy beats, Aiyer brought the same mad vibe to year old alt- rock band Blek.
Along with Jared Juan Creado on bass and Rishi Bradoo on guitars and vocals, the three piece outfit has been storming around the bubbling underground alternative venue spaces in Mumbai.
The band is currently working on their debut EP, which would be released under Ennui. Bomb, the label which brings out the annual stupid ditties compilation featuring new talent from across the nation.
Three of five tracks that will be featured on the album include – Running Into Walls Occasionally Helps, The Life, Aquatic With Steve Zessou, And Minus The Makeup.
Blek band has a new sound, new songs and a record that is full of up-tempo music, the tunes are very dance-oriented, lounge and electronica as opposed to straight-up grunge.

Earlier, opening for the band ‘Blek’ was performed by two reputable bands of Nagaland “UDX” (formerly known as Dementia) and “Sunep ensemble band”.
