Call it a man-made disaster, construction of the new traffic diversion under construction near War Cemetery has precipitated subsidence that has affected residences located just above the construction site.
With heavy downpours in recent weeks, the consequential subsidence leading to landslide has affected the road including a residences below Raj Bhavan.
The landslide has already damaged the official quarter occupied by commissioner & secretary K.T. Sukhalu, who was compelled to abandon the building on Tuesday.
It is feared that continuing landslide could increase in the coming days and could even spread further above and affect the residential building of the opposition leader Tokheho Yepthomi,currently under construction including the Raj Bhavan compound.
Though the parapet along the construction site is almost completed, there are however indications of the wall collapsing due to the weight of the mud sliding from above.
The soil around the area is largely rocky clay and any disturbances by heavy downpour or earth cutting, further loosen the soil to cause landslides.
