
Nagaland chief minister T.R Zeliang expressed happiness at the signing of the Naga Peace Accord between the Government of India and the NSCN (I-M) on August 3 in New Delhi and attributed it to the collective efforts of all stakeholders during the 17 years of political dialogue.
Addressing the 69th Independence Day celebration held at the Secretariat Plaza, here Saturday, Zeliang said the Naga political issue had dominated social and political discourse in Nagaland and also on the agenda of every political party government in Nagaland since statehood.
He also congratulated Government of India and the leadership of the NSCN (I-M) for historic Peace Accord including the mass based Naga civil society groups Church leaders for having tirelessly worked towards bringing a lasting peace.
Zeliang also lauded Interlocutor R.N. Ravi for his hard work and consultations with most of the prominent mass-based Naga civil society groups. Zeliang said the Accord appeared only to be a broad framework for an agreement and once it finalised a process of consultations would be held before finalising it.
He said the law and order situation in the state was by and large peaceful despite abrogation of the cease fire by the NSCN(K) resulting in the killings of several security force personnel. He also said the deaths and injury of civilians in Phek district, was unfortunate. Achievements of various departments of which some mentioned included:
R&B: Ten new road projects sanctioned by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) totalling Rs.61.93 crore under execution while widening of NH 61 and repaid of bridges on NH 61 and NH 155 including improvement of NH 36 were being taken up.
Women Deptt: Women Resource Centres have been set up in Mokokchung, Chozuba , Peren, Wokha and Zunheboto, besides training to enhance livelihood for women.
Industry: Apparel and garment making centre at 6th Mile sanctioned by the ministry of textiles was in good progress and expected to be completed within 2015.
Under Nagaland Mini Tool Room and Training Centre, Dimapur 600 students were trained in different trades of which 150 students got job placement during 2014-15. Also 606 educated unemployed youth were also trained for self-employment.
H&TE: Under the Rastriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), foundation stone for New Model College at Wakching in Mon district was laid on June 27.Under the ‘co-ordinated Action for skill development’ six new Polytechnics will be set up in the State, out of which, the new Polytechnics at Dimapur, Phek and Tuensang are expected to start functioning from the next academic session.
V&AH: A pig genome study for Nagaland to be taken by the department in collaboration with International Livestock Research Institute and the Tata Trust to assess the pig genetic breed and suggest the best breed that would be suited to farmers. A veterinary college at Jalukie has been approved and set up under the central sector.
Horti: The department had carried out the area expansion of various focus crops, covering a total area of 1939 hectares under fruit crops, and 600 hectares for vegetable cultivation during last year under Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture.
Earlier, the chief minister received the salute at an impressive march past presented by contingents of 19 AR, 78 Bn CRPF, 4 NAP, DEF Kohima, 10NAP(IR),Home Guards, Wild Life Armed Forest Protection Force, Nagaland Police Central Brass Band, ex-Servicemen, NCC(Girls Sr) 1st Naga Girls Bn, NCC-No 1 NL Air Sqn(Flg), BS&G, Ruzukhrie GHSS, 9 AR Pipe Band, Seikhazou GHSS, TMGHSS, JNV Kohima, Chandmari HSS and Adolescent Girld Bagpiper Band.
Presentations of dances and national anthem through sign language by Tabitha Enabling Academy and Cherry Blossom School, martial arts display, armed drill display by 15NAP(IR), cultural dances by Pochury, Lotha, Khiamniungan and Ao troupes.
