With the onset of monsoon, there is constant occurrence of flash landslides and mudslides in various parts of Nagaland, causing roadblocks and damage to property, the branch of roads and bridges of state Public Works Department (PWD-R&B) is reportedly trying to fight against this nature’s fury sans any contingency funds.
“We don’t have any contingency fund set aside to contain this kind of problem,” minister for Roads & Bridges G. Kaito Aye admitted while talking to Nagaland Post on the sidelines of the inauguration of new NPWD building here Wednesday. He said the department was trying to manage from different sources of funds from the 13th Finance Commission award which has started trickling in. While informing that there was no other major landslides reported so far besides massive landslide at 34 Km near Botsa on NH-61 (Kohima-Wokha road), Kaito stated that restoration work was on and expressed hope that the road would be clear for the traffic by Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, commissioner and secretary PWD Temjen Toy also admitted that there was no contingency fund for repairing of roads damaged during the rainy season. He also confirmed that apart from landslides near Botsa on NH-61 and near old KMC dumping site on the NH-29, there was no report of any other major landslide on the highways.
On the deplorable road conditions in the capital, Toy said roads in the state could not last even if they were constructed as per specifications unless proper drainages were made.
He went on to add that problem would still persist even when proper drainages were constructed if people did not have civic sense and do away with the habit of throwing waste in the drainages which often result in clogging and overflowing of water to the roads.
