North East Christian University (NECU) Bill, 2012 passed by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on Saturday last proposes to establish a private university which focused on imparting training and research in both conventional and non-conventional disciplines including theology.

Once established, NECU would offer various course in medicine, liberal and fine arts, commerce, law, management and inter-faith religious education and slew of other courses not offered by institutions in Northeast region of India.

Some of the courses listed include fashion technology, cosmetology, agri-informatics, actuarial science, yogic science, petro-chemicals, intellectual property rights etc.

The university sponsored jointly by Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) and Council of Baptist Churches in Northeast India (CBCNEI) would have its headquarters at Dimapur, Nagaland’s commercial hub.

NECU proposes to design and run courses and programmes leading to the award of certificates, diplomas, degree of bachelor, master, doctoral and post-doctoral levels and other academic distinctions under the faculties and in the subjects enumerated in the schedule of the NECU Act.

State minister for urban development and higher and technical education Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu who moved the introduction of NECU Bill on Friday last in the House stated that the university would provide courses to students hailing from sponsoring bodies/states.

Stating that a lot of money was spent on students for acquiring professional and technical proficiency outside the state, the minister hoped that once NECU was set up in Dimapur, many Naga students need not go outside the state for further studies.
