It’s fast becoming known as billionaires’ row, so it perhaps the newest resident on Britain’s most expensive street is an unsurprising addition. When Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich was searching for a new London home it would appear he didn’t look much further than Kensington Palace Gardens.
The billionaire owner of Chelsea football club has bought a £90 million on the road near Kensington Palace, it has been reported.
This makes him the third person out of the six wealthiest people on The Sunday Times Rich List to make their home on Kensington Palace Gardens.
The title of billionaires’ row was once held by The Bishops Avenue in north London, according to The Sunday Times. However, Abramovich’s purchase on Kensington Palace Gardens has cemented the street’s position as its rightful successor.
No estate agents were thought to have been used in the private sale and sources told The Sunday Times Abramovich, who is worth £10.3 billion, was the buyer.
Abramovich is thought to have suspended renovation plans on a £150million project to knock nine flats in Lowndes Square, Belgravia, into mansion for himself, his partner Dasha Zhukova and their young son.
The family were thought to have become frustrated with the three-year wait for the Belgravia project to be completed and had been living in a Chelsea-based grade II-listed house while building work was being done. Abramovich’s new neighbours include Britain’s richest man Lakshmi Mittal, a steel magnate worth £23.8billion, and Ukrainian-born oil magnate Len Blavatnik, who has made at least £4.7billion.
Mittal bought his Kensington Palace Gardens home for £57 million from the Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone in 2004, and renamed it Taj Mittal. Tree-lined Kensington Palace Gardens also houses and Russian and Israeli embassies and the avenue has armed police from the diplomatic protection squad guarding each end of it.
