Drawing attention on reports appearing in sections of the local press on October 10, over the statement attributed to chief minister T.R.Zeliang on the border issue, Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) through the Media Officer (MO) to CM clarified that the chief minister had never stated that Nagaland lacked documents to prove or substantiate its claims on the border.
It was clarified, that the chief minister had only said that the border dispute between Assam and Nagaland was an old problem that landed up in the Supreme Court on a writ petition filed by the government of Assam . The MO clarified that the chief minister had stated that the court sought certain documents such as digitized maps but that for want of more documents, the case has been dragging on for a long time.
It was also stated that the chief minister had mentioned that there were certain areas in the border without clear demarcation between the two states, which resulted in dispute since creation of Nagaland state.
The MO stated that the government of Assam has taken the 1925 notification as the constitutional boundary which has never been verified on the ground nor authenticated by both Assam and Nagaland.
In this regard, the MO said the chief minister suggested that the border dispute should arrive at an amicable settlement through mutual understanding and cooperation between the two states and their people as directed by the Supreme Court to the union home ministry vide an order dated September 24,2014.
Further, the MO asserted that as the boundary issue between the two states being a sensitive matter, it was in the interest of Nagaland if everyone exercised “caution and restraint” and not attribute “wrong statements to the hon’ble chief minister.
