Training on soyabean was organized by AICRP- Soyabean (SASRD) in collaboration with ATMA Dimapur Saturday at ATMA training hall. Speaking in the training, programme officer (AICRP-Soyabean) Dr L Tongpang Longkumer said that the soyabean being a legume crop makes the soil fertile by fixing atmospheric nitrogen and that it was one of the richest, cheapest and easiest sources of best quality proteins and fats.
He pointed out that soybean seeds contain 20% oil and 40-42% quality protein and that it was consumed as dal due to the presence of enzyme Lipoxidase, which produces off flavor.
Briefing on the usage of soyabean, he said it can be consumed as soybean oil, salad oil and margarine, the oil is also used for the preparation of frozen desserts, cookie shortenings, confections, icings, ice-cream coating, whipped toppings and coffee whiteners, the industrial use of the oil include soaps, paints, resins and drying soil, the products obtained from the seeds are soymilk, soypaneer, soy sauce and soy flour, locally, fermented soybean seeds are utilized as a delicacy, soybean is called as wonder crop and meat for the poor. Dr L Tongpang further emphasized on climate and soils, where soybean can be cultivated in a wide range of climates and soils and encouraged the farmers to plant soybean mid June to end of July.
Earlier in technical programme session-I, package of practice of soyabean was delivered by Dr Engrala, junior scientist (AICRP-Soyabean), plant protection measures was shown by Ronchamo followed by technical session-II of farmer’s-scientist interaction organized by ATMA on farmers mobile service by Tasvina Borah, scientist (ICAR) Jarnapani, agriculture marketing by I Panger, member secretary & CEO (NSAMB), value addition on soyabean by Dr Anamika, PC (KVK) Jarnapani, and vote of thanks was delivered by Tonikali DPD, ATMA, Dimapur.
